This summer, Mi’kmaq Nation welcomed back two places in their homelands. Mesgilg Maqamigew (“big land”) is a 3,400 acre parcel of forests, streams, and wetlands which doubled the Nation’s landbase and offers expanded opportunities to hunt, harvest, and practice culture. Pugweliget (“living together in a group”), is a 83 acre parcel abutting one of the Nation’s housing developments, which will allow residents room to breathe and access land right at their doorsteps. These returns are part of the Tributary Land Returns, a collaboration between The Wabanaki Commission on Land & Stewardship and the First Light community to return over 50,000 acres to Wabanaki communities across the place now called Maine.
We invite you to join a webinar hosted by First Light, featuring panelists Shannon Hill, Environmental Health Director for Mi’kmaq Nation and member of the Wabanaki Commission on Land and Stewardship; Darren Ranco Ph.D., Executive Director of the Wabanaki Commission on Land and Stewardship, Brett Ciccotelli, First Light Core Staff on Returning; and Anne Read, Maine Land Protection Project Manager at Trust for Public Land. We’ll discuss what these two land returns mean for Mi’kmaq Nation, the collaborative work that made them possible, and what we learned as we worked together.
