Ever since colonization began, Wabanaki people have never stopped fighting for sovereignty, livelihood, and the return of land. Only recently have many non-native people and organizations in what's now called Maine begun to hear their calls. Moving at the speed of trust and with the spirit of solidarity, non-native organizations are beginning to work together to take responsibility for our ongoing role in colonialism and make the changes needed to return land, access, financial resources, and decision-making authority to Wabanaki communities. These are crucial steps in making amends and building a livable future for all beings.
The work of relearning and returning has been supported in part through Learning Journeys, yearlong engagements where non-native organizations come together to hear and learn from Wabanaki leaders, and to do our work to understand how our organizations participate in colonialism, and how we can transform.
Today, we're excited to announce a third cohort of the Learning Journey, launching in October 2024. A core planning team, including Kara Wooldrik, Ethan Miller, Lokotah Sanborn, Ellie Oldach, and Peter Forbes are working with Wabanaki advisors and the First Light community to design a powerful journey.
This journey is for all non-native organizations with a role in the work of return (in all its many meanings), whether you've long been engaged with First Light or are new to the community. This work needs all of us.
Please check out the Upcoming Courses to learn more about this journey and consider joining.
