Notes from the Listening and Learning Session with Passamaquoddy at Sipayik
We are honored to be welcomed by Chief Marla Dana of the Sipayik Passamaquoddy to their home grounds to meet with their community and tribal officials.
Monday, December 10: We will begin with a special meeting and seminar at 2:00 PM with Penobscot historian and activist, Maria Girouard, on the history of the Maine Indian Lands Claim Settlement Act. The meeting will be held at the Penobscot Tribal Council Chambers on Indian Island at the Nicholas Sapiel Building
We hope all can join for dinner following the session at Helen’s Restaurant at 111 Main St, Machias by 6:30pm. This dinner will be our best opportunity to review the two very important days ahead.
After dinner, we will drive east 30 minutes to Cobscook Community Learning Center 10 Commissary Point Road, Lubec, where we will all stay the night and where our meetings will be held the following day. Let us know on the registration page if you’d like a room.
Tuesday, December 11: We will meet at 9:00 am with Chief Marla Dana, tribal representative Rena Newell, and others from the Sipayik Passamaquoddy community who are involved in land access issues of great importance to the Tribe. We will have lunch there at CCLC and in the afternoon visit a potential project site of importance.
We hope everyone will spend Tuesday night at CCLC because we intend to have dinner together as well as an important dialogue about the future of the unfolding collaboration with Wabanaki interests and of the learning journey.
