First Light Learning Journey, Penobscot Session

This is the first of a series of workshops, and is focused on Penobscot people and interests. Our next workshops are anticipated to focus on other tribes, building towards a dialogue focused on collaboration and how that might look in Maine.
8:30 – 9:00am: Coffee and light breakfast
9:00 – 9:30am: (Peter and Ciona) Welcome and introductions, Outline for the Day
9:30 – 10:00am: (Peter, Ciona and panel: Darren Ranco, Maria Girouard and Maulian Dana) Introductions of the panel of three guests. How this idea started and where we hope to go.
10:00 – 12:00: Panel presentations, Penobscot access to Maine land and water over time
- How has access to land and water for Penobscot people changed over
time? - How is Native life today shaped by the 1980 Maine Indian Claims
Settlement Act? - What has been the impact of loss of access to land to Penobscot culture,
opportunity and ways of life?
12:00 – 1:00pm: Lunch, with presentation and conversation about current and past Native and non-Native collaborations for conservation.
1:00 – 1:45pm: Return to the Panel: Thinking of the future, a conversation about possible ideas for collaborations, and where land trust work might intersect with native uses, lands, traditions such as programming, land acquisition, use agreements, other ideas? Wishes?
1:45 – 2:15pm: (Peter) Gratitude to panelists and break. Panelists depart.
2:15 – 3:00pm: (Peter) Follow up discussion and reactions. A discussion.
3:00 – 4:00pm: (Ciona) An Initial Discussion about Possible Tools, Land Trusts and Collaborations
4:00 – 4:30pm: (Peter) The Learning Journey from here, and next steps. Who and What is missing?
4:30 – 5:00pm: Closing Remarks and Adjournment. Thank you.
