In 2023, the First Light community raised a Solidarity Deposit to seed a new fund, one that would be held and administered by the Wabanaki Commission on Land and Stewardship. Over that year, the First Light community used a provisional name, the Wabanaki Self-Determination Fund, temporarily in use while waiting for the Commission to arrive at the right name for this project.
Now, the Commission has decided on a name for this fund: Wolankeyutomone kisi apaciyewik. This Passamaquoddy phrase translates to "Let us take good care of what has returned." Commission member Darrell Newell offers a recording of the name, above.
The First Light community carries an ongoing commitment to supporting this fund, at the direction and with the guidance of the Wabanaki Commission.
